What Is An Interactive Map? #
An interactive map project uses digital mapping tools to present information, stories, or data connected to specific places. Instead of a static image, these maps let audiences click, zoom, and explore layers of information. You can combine text, images, video, or audio with geographic points, creating a rich, place-based way to tell a story.
Why This Format? #
Interactive maps are especially useful when you want to show how stories, histories, or data are tied to location. They can make abstract ideas more concrete, help audiences see patterns across space, and invite exploration. Maps also let you experiment with layering multimedia in ways that highlight both connections and differences across places.
What You Might Learn #
- Spatial storytelling: Learn how place shapes meaning and how geography can organize a story.
- Research & curation: Gather and connect data or stories to real-world locations.
- Information design: Practice balancing visuals, text, and interactivity to keep maps engaging but clear.
- Digital mapping skills: Gain experience with widely used digital tools for maps and visualization.
General Process #
- Choose your focus: Decide what story or information you want to tell through place.
- Collect content: Gather locations, media (images, audio, video), and descriptions.
- Organize & structure: Think about how your audience will move through the map: by theme, by time, or simply by geography.
- Select a tool: Choose a platform that fits your goals (simple pins, multimedia-rich popups, or layered maps).
- Design & build: Add markers, upload media, and write concise, engaging descriptions.
- Test & refine: Check usability, readability, and navigation. Make sure the map is easy to explore.
Accessibility Considerations #
- Provide alt text and transcripts for all media.
- Use high-contrast markers and labels for visibility.
- Provide a text-based list of locations and descriptions for screen reader accessibility.
- Ensure that the map can be navigated by keyboard as well as mouse.
