Digital Knowledge Center

The Digital Knowledge Center (DKC), located in the Hurley Convergence Center room 408, empowers UMW students to be digital creators by providing the support, technology, and spaces to complete digital projects, including audio, video, graphic design, 3D modeling, and website projects. The DKC:

Online Projects Privacy Syllabus Language

When students work on the open web you’ll want to have conversations with them about privacy and gain permissions when it is applicable. It is important to discuss how and where a student’s name may be displayed on the web. Use of a pseudonym may be desired for students who do not want their name publicly associated with what they are writing. Applications like WordPress give a user the ability to change their display name. Below we’ve provide some sample syllabus language that you may want to use:

Online Privacy Policy

This course includes at least one online, public digital project. The work you create as part of this project may be shared across a variety of public platforms and remain online indefinitely. If you would like to remain anonymous, I encourage you to use a pseudonym and think carefully before publishing information that could identify you. If you have concerns about publishing work in an online, public digital project, please contact me as soon as possible.

Canvas Module

Where to Get Help Canvas Module

The student academic support centers maintain a “Where to Get Help” Canvas Module to help direct students to resources that can help them succeed in their classwork. This module can be imported to any Canvas course via the Canvas Commons.

Request a Class Visit

DKC staff can visit your classroom to help students get started with their digital projects, lead a discussion on a digital topic relevant to your class, or give a general overview of DKC services.

Getting Started with Digital Projects

Audio Project

Duration: 45 minutes

We will discuss the basics of recording and editing audio and introduce beginner-friendly tools for audio projects.

Web Project (DoOO or Sites@UMW)

Duration: 45 minutes

We will walk students through the process of signing up for an account Sites@UMW or Domain of One’s Own and building their first site.

Video Project

Duration: 45 minutes

We will discuss the basics of filming and editing video and introduce beginner-friendly tools for video projects.

Image Project

Duration: 45 minutes

We will discuss the basics of creating infographics, photo editing, or graphic design and introduce beginner-friendly tools for image projects.


Digital Subject Presentations

Generative AI

Duration: 30 minutes

An introduction to the practical and ethical considerations surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence tools, and an overview of the tools available to students at UMW (primarily Microsoft Copilot).

Note: This visit requires a pre-meeting with DKC staff to discuss the AI policy for your class.

Digital Project Demo

Duration: 30 minutes

A brief showcase of what’s possible with various forms of digital media (audio, video, website, etc.) along with an overview of the resources available to support these projects. Great for assignments where students have a choice between many different forms of media for an assignment.

Online Identity &
Domain of One’s Own

Duration: 30 minutes

We’ll lead a short discussion about online identity, the story someone can tell about you based on what they find online. We’ll then introduce students to Domain of One’s Own, UMW’s unique web-building platform, and talk about how students can use this platform to take control of their online identity and stand out in the job market after graduation.

Introduction to the
Digital Knowledge Center

Duration: 10 minutes

A quick introduction to the Digital Knowledge Center and the services, resources, and spaces we provide.

Note: The Introduction to Peer Academic Resources FSEM presentation organized by the Speaking & Writing Center includes a brief introduction the the DKC. This visit elaborates more on the many resources available to students.


Miscellaneous

In-Class Activity Support

DKC consultants can join your class to answer questions and offer support to students during an in-class activity or project. This visit type does not include a formal presentation. We’ll follow up with you to discuss the specific needs of your activity.
