  • Accessibility!

I kind of already knew it, and it’s a part of why I’m at this school, but I thought it was cool that in the video, the ODR mentioned that 11-13% of the UMW student body has disclosed a disability. It’s interesting that 11-13%, which feels like a rather small amount of the people on campus is still more than almost every other university in Virginia.

Accommodations are more individualized. They confront an individual’s needs, and give a person what they need based on how THEY need to operate in a given environment (things like an accommodation to be allowed to eat in a class you wouldn’t normally be allowed to eat in might be a good example of this!) There also almost always has to be an explanation for why an accommodation is needed.

In contrast, accessibility is a more general concept. It is making it so that people with disabilities have access to the world around them in similar ways to their able-bodied counterparts. Accessibility features are usually things that are BUILT IN, such as a ramp, an elevator, or automatic doors. In general though, its an approach that considers disabilities alongside the needs of able-bodied people.

My general opinion is that the best way to be accessible is to remove as much of the systemic barriers as possible. For example, every classroom should have entirely accessible furniture in it, not just those used by people with documented disabilities. (somebody please change the desks in Farmer, they hurt my legs and are evil)

Anyway!! Back to actually talking about work at the DKC, I feel like accessibility requests here may be related to how accessible (or inaccessible) some of the furniture is. It may also include things like speaking more clearly or adjusting speech to be more clear.

I really want to be careful about making sure my website (this one and also my main domain) are both accessible. I also want to think about how the posters and posts I make may appear to people with various visual disabilities.

  • My First WordPress Website

After trying out many, many themes, and a recommendation from Adi, I landed on the Astra theme. I found this theme super customizable which is awesome because I was looking forward to the design aspect of this project. Due to the digital nature of this sites purpose, I went for a tech/futuristic look. I included some edited images of the American Dogwood flower to create the black, white, and green color palette. I chose the American Dogwood flower to be the figurehead for this site because I wanted to include nature to contrast with the other tech elements in this design. The American Dogwood is also the national flower of Virginia, so I thought it would be nice to tie that in.

Something new I learned about WordPress is that the themes all have different customizability levels making some more efficient than others. At first, I had a hard time finding a theme that did everything I wanted because I was choosing one based on how I wanted mine to look in the end rather than one that provided a good base.

A fun fact about me is that I was a competitive gymnast for 7 years. So, for my YouTube video to embed I choose my childhood favorite gymnast Shawn Johnson’s 2008 Olympics Qualifying Balance Beam routine. I genuinely think it is one of the best beam routines of all time so I would recommend watching!

Thanks for tuning in to my blog, check back in soon for a new update. And as always, stay creative.

  • The Building Continues…

It only took me an hour, but I was finally able to customize my plugin to my liking. For the sidebars, all I really did was delete the phrases I didn’t want/need (FAQ, shopping, events, etc.) because there wasn’t much else to customize. For the plugin, I chose WPB Accordions because I didn’t like the […]

  • Website 2: Electric Boogaloo

On my main site (https://acfolio.org/), I have a plugin that allows me to have an interactive portfolio, where pieces I’ve uploaded can be opened and viewed in more detail in a shadowbox. It also allows me to categorize my art by type (digital, traditional, animation) or by series when it comes to my collections like the Tarot Series, or my self portraits.

The plugin I used to do this is called Visual Portfolio. I found it when I was attempting (and failing) to get my site to display my portfolio the way I wanted last semester, and it has pretty much stuck since.

I’m really looking forward to learning more about the 3D Design appointments, but I’m also excited about website appointments.

  • Figuring it Out

The biggest part of my customization on here (I’m focusing on my subdomain for these assignments because my main domain is pretty much fully customized) has been the installation of a new theme (Go) and changing my color scheme.

Buttons and menus are NOT simple and easy to set up in Word Press, despite what the website wants us to think. Despite these struggles, I did manage to figure it out. Yippee!

My most recently watched YouTube video was How Liberty Dies: The Politics of Star Wars by Arken the Amerikan. I thought it was pretty interesting, and I spend pretty much all my time thinking about Star Wars, so I personally can’t complain about an hour plus of Star Wars content.

  • I Survived My First Mock Consultation!

The heading says it all! I had my first mock consultation today with Mayday (played by Zoe). I had forgotten most of what was asked of me (oops), but by utilizing the DKC guides as well as asking my fellow consultants, I was able to help Mayday set up a Doman of One’s Own account!

    Feeling: victorious.

  • Linked my subdomain to my main domain!

After establishing my DKC training subdomain, I was focusing mainly on sprucing up my main domain. Now that I’m happy with the way my main homepage looks, I can work on my DKC training page, which is what I was tasked with doing in the first place.

So I figured out how to make a widget and hyperlink for my subdomain, and now they’re connected! And here is my subsequent first blog post.

    Yay!

Be on the lookout for more blog posts on both my main domain and DKC training subdomain.

I ended up completely removing the footer after messing with it. It was easy to understand, but I did not like how it looked to have on my website, so I removed it.

I chose the plugin: Fonts Plugin. I wanted to have more options for fonts on my website, but my theme did not allow for me to change them. I found a plugin that lets me use google fonts and custom fonts, so I am using that.

I am looking forward to teaching people how to use the 3D printers as I really like seeing what people end up making. I think it is a very useful skill that people should use while it is free.

Here is a cat image that was going to go on my blog page, but the page do not support images, so he will go here.

I messed around with the theme a little bit. I chose a more simple one so that I could customize it to my liking more. I did not see that I could not change the font, or I would have probably chosen another theme.

I learned about the difference between blocks themes and non block themes. However I had never touched WordPress before this, so pretty much everything I learned was new. I think it is interesting but also kind of frustrating to work with WordPress.

    I love odd history videos.
