  • Third Mock Consultation Reflection

I survived my third mock consultation! In theory this should’ve been one of the easiest ones because it was just a lot of font issues. In reality though? I didn’t know how to do most of the things Mayday asked of me. Oops. So to answer the question of what parts felt tricky, I would […]

  • 3/12/25: Second Mock Consultation Reflection

    • What parts of the consultation made you feel confident, and why?
      • I think I was good about giving directions and double checking my work. I also think I did a decent job comforting the student by relating to them.
    • Was there a moment during the consultation that felt tricky? How did you handle it?
      • It was tricky to fill dead air when the wifi was being really slow. I also sometimes struggled with blanking on knowledge.
    • How did you go about figuring out what the student needed and wanted?
      • I asked about what the issue or assignment was and asked to see the assignment. This allowed me to get an idea of what the person wanted as well as what the assignment itself was.
    • What did you learn about your own consulting style from this experience?
      • I find that I try to relate to the person a lot and try to work alongside them.
    • What would you change in your next consultation based on what you learned this time?
      • I would try to keep better track of time. I think I cut it a bit too close, even if it was partially because of the wifi.
  • Intro to Video Editing

Well, here we are. After way too long I’ve finished creating my video assignment and captions. Here is it: “In Defense of The Tortured Poets Department.” Which, again–objectively a great album. (“Midnights” was so good too. I think Taylor is getting too much flack for her newer albums.) Here is the transcription of my video: […]

  • WordPress Mock Consultation 2

This consultation was quite tricky, I was faced with problems that I had not yet learned the answers to, in fact I had to ask for help with each one. However, I am taking it as a learning experience, because now I know how to add color to text, use columns for advanced formatting, and how to use the classic block.

Although I did not feel super confident in this consultation, I was confident in the way I directed the conversation. I think I did a good job of understanding the student’s project and providing appropriate advice. I learned through this consultation that my consulting style involves a lot of trial and error and experimentation.

Next time I would just try and be more friendly and talkative. It is not like I was unfriendly this time, but I was very focused on the tasks since I did not know how to do them, and less focused on communicating clearly.

  • WordPress Mock Consultation 1

I was overall pretty confident with this consultation, I was most prepared for it, and I feel like I communicated well and provided lots of useful advice. I remembered to mention things like accessibility which is important when website building. Something I had trouble with a bit was where to start when I was explaining how to make a website. I started at posts and pages, but I should have started with themes. Next time I would introduce themes first because I think it would make more sense to people who do not know anything about WordPress.

I think I did a good job about figuring out what the student needed, I honestly just asked a lot of questions. I think this aligns with my consulting style; I think I definitely am not afraid to ask questions. Overall, I was proud of this consultation, next time I would just maybe reorder the subjects I introduced a bit, and also talk a little louder, I have noticed I am quite quiet and trail off a lot.

  • 2/25/25: Poor Example

    • Some things you still have questions about or need more clarification on.
      • I cannot think of any questions at the moment.
    • Is there anything the accessibility checker revealed that you couldn’t modify?
      • It was upset with me over the profile pictures of commenters not having alt text.
    • Link to the “bad web design” page and talk about all the things you did to make it as inaccessible as possible.
      • Bad Design (I hated this)
      • I made sure that the images used had no alt text, made the text as awful to read as possible, and pretty much just did the opposite of what the checker said was done well.
  • Mock Consultations: Episode 2 (kind of)

I feel really confident about my ability to get through the first few steps (setting up website, diverting people from making bad website name decisions, etc.) of a consultation when setting up a website. I am also pretty good at giving examples of what people do on their websites.

The most difficult part of the consultation was honestly the WiFi being as bad as it was… I had to make so many jokes about how bad the WiFi or come up with things to fill up the time while waiting for things to load. Who knew small talk was difficult?! (me, but still) I also had trouble when the theme that I recommended did not work like it usually does and I was very confused because I had never seen it do that before.

I started with introducing myself and asking about the assignment so that I had at least a small idea of what May Day needed on their assignment. Then, as we worked through setting up the subdomain itself, I tried to tailor my own advice and questions toward the kind of website May Day said they needed.

I’m pretty good at explaining more complicated concepts in simple terms! Specifically making comparisons and metaphors for what a function does in order to explain it without having to rely too much on jargon.

I would really like to work on how nervous I get. I said “um” approximately 57 times.

  • Accessibility Part 2

I have gone through my website and tried to make sure it is as accessible as possible. Firstly, I went through all the images and added alt text, then I adjusted my colors and gradient type to make sure the color contrast was stark enough. I also went through and deleted any empty textbox’s that I had left around, and finally, I changed my main font to be more easily legible. I also downloaded an accessibility plug-in to check all of my work, and good thing I did because I had missed putting alt text for an image!

One thing I still need to do for my site is add a light mode setting, but I had a hard time finding a plug-in that would allow color customization for free. The colors to my site are quite specific and add to the mood, so it is important to me that both dark and light modes reflect that. I also did not change my header font for the sake of maintaining the theme of the site, I had trouble finding a way to check of fonts are accessible, but I do not think it is too hard to read. Either way I’ll find some time to ask about it and maybe fix it.

This is the link to my Bad Example Site. For this I started off by adding some random empty text boxes, adding an image with important information with no alt text, and a random suspicious link. I then went in and made the font tiny, way too close to the background color, and in the most illegible font I could find. I cannot even read it, so I think this is a successful bad example.

That is all for today, and as always, stay creative!

  • Graphic Design is My Passion

Today was spent mostly on accessible web design and the bad design page, loving entitled REALLY BAD web design :), which can be found here: https://dkctraining.acfolio.org/really-bad-web-design/

My main page, which is where I installed the accessibility checker, had a few inaccessible issues that were revealed but unfix-able. These included ARIA elements that were hidden, heading order issues, etc, that I would be able to fix without going into the code.

The page itself is… bad.. intentionally!! Shes kinda ugly, with photos that have no alt-text. She has social media buttons, all of which lead to the wrong sites. She has words that move quickly and are poorly formatted, and she has buttons that lead absolutely nowhere, and don’t have names that would tell you otherwise. BOOO BAD ACCESSIBILTY BOOO.

  • Second Mock Consultation Reflection

I have to start this out by saying that it was absolutely brutal to watch half an hour of footage of myself giving a consultation. Now onto the reflection! The part of the consultation that I felt most confident in was establishing the subdomain. This is because I was able to practice that skill in […]
