My final video cut is ready!!!!!

I had so much fun making this video even though there were a lot of technical difficulties. I learned a new video editing software, and I know it was very unnecessary but I loved learning how to use the scary beast that is DaVinci Resolve. I also got to

After my rough-cut viewing party, I went to work adding all the feedback I received. I changed the fonts to make them more legible because, even though they looked cool, no one knew what was happening. I shortened the intro text on the screen and added narration so that anyone who hasn’t been staring at it for hours and memorized it (just me) can also know what’s happening. I also made some general changes so that the theme of the video was more obvious. I moved the interviewee’s name under the actual person being interviewed and fixed the timing of the font changes so that it’s clear that Oli’s part was an “accident.”

A major obstacle I had to tackle (among the many others) was the weird audio. We had originally recorded it with an audio kit. But my quick check failed to notice the loud buzzing noise that somehow materialized in the quiet podcast studio that we couldn’t hear recorded anywhere else. Luckily I was already using the most overly complex editing software already! While I hadn’t managed to fix it before the rough cut was watched, the audio is now (hopefully) fixed and very easy to listen to.

I also feel the need to say that I did not script the interview responses. They are just truly talented actors, give them their Oscars.

  • Introducing the new DKC… the ADC

I made two versions for this video, a version with sound and interviews & a version with no sound and no interviews! (the one with no sound is for the ADC’s smart TVs of course.)

The process of making these videos was a lot of fun, and I loved being able to have the creative freedom to make a video project like this. I see everyone took very different routes for their own videos but my main inspiration was making a parody video of the original DKC introduction video that we all practiced earlier in the semester.

The biggest road bump that occurred in the process of making these two videos was that my original interview shots and audio were very poor quality, so I had to redo all the interview shots. I recorded with a camera that had very strange video settings and it made everything look horrible. 🙁

Otherwise, this was a very fun project and I hope you enjoy my videos!

images animations and effects were all from the CapCut free library

audio is called Bike Rides by The Green Orbs

WOW! This project was so much fun but also a doozy! I have learned so much from doing this project. In the beginning, I decided (for whatever reason) I wanted to go a more plot-driven route with the video. However, my ambitions got the best of me and halfway through the project I realized that it will be far too long and I had to make some drastic cuts. What we are left with now is an amalgamation of the clips I cobbled together, being held together with dramatics and sound effects. I recorded some of my own sounds to add to the video as well as source others from royalty-free websites. The biggest critique from my peers was that there were not enough editing and sound effect bits, so I doubled them and tried my hand at comedic timing. Essentially I “committed to the bit”. I used Canva as the editor because after the small video editing assignment, I wanted to test the limits of Canva. Overall a refreshing and enriching learning experince, I can’t wait for the next big project! Can’t wait to see everyone else’s.

    Surprise Challenge:

    Incorporating Feedback

  • the very rough cut

Here’s a very rough cut of my ADC video. I know it’s a little longer than it should be but that’s what final cuts are for right?

  • Top-Secret Video Project Final Cut

Based on the feedback I received, I made a few changes to my final video cut. Below is a list of the critiques and suggestions on my original video:

    • Jaunty music
    • Static for tv transition, maybe longer?
    • Text a bit bigger on slides
    • Play around with font choice to convey sentiment
    • Screaming?
    • B-roll tie in with the narration
Picture showing "Hello Comrades!" written in stencil text.

Starting with the first suggestion, I did end up adding music. Since I used Canva as my editor of choice, I went through the available music and tried to find one that fit my video’s theme. I decided to go with music called “Advertising”. It was upbeat and inspirational, and I thought it paired well with my video. I also did end up adding a static sound effect and making the static transition a bit longer. Another thing I changed was my font choice and the size of the text on some parts. I decided to go with a font called stencil because it reminded me of the font used in old propaganda pamphlets. On a couple of slides, the font was a little small, so I made it bigger.

I did not incorporate two pieces of feedback. One suggestion was that I add screaming to the video, but I felt like it wouldn’t really go with it. The purpose of the video is to create an illusion that the ADC is amazing, and the people are brainwashed except for Winston who gets disappeared. I did not want to add Winston’s scream because I thought it would blatantly break the illusion, and I thought the cut to static was enough. Another piece of feedback that I did not incorporate was the b-roll tie in with narration. Redoing the b-roll would take a long time to do and I already liked the b-roll I captured. Though it may have not matched perfectly with my narration, its overall purpose was to show off the DKC and that is what it did.

Now, what you all have been waiting for… MY FINAL VIDEO!

Thank you so much to all the people who helped in its creation. Again, I used Canva to edit this video. While there were limitations, I enjoyed the experience for the most part. I am definitely getting more comfortable using the editor.

No time to write up a blog post right now 🙁 but wanted to share the rough cut for my video (wip on this blog page)

  • Sites @ UMW Project

I was FINALLY able to create my fictions site for this project and I’m really stoked about it!

    The link is : https://numberoneunicornfan.umwsites.net

The difference between Sites @ UMW and Domain Of Ones Own is customization and user experience. Sites was much easier to get up and running, in total it took me around 45 mins to make the website, as oppose to several shifts it took me with DoOO. As mentioned in last week’s training meeting, there was far less customization but also less room for error. Sites @ UMW is what most people THINK website building is like, but DoOO is the full kit and caboodle, you can customize and edit nearly anything on your website, but that can also lead to it crashing or messing something else on your website.
