  • Sites@UMW Exploration

Today I finally dabbled into Sites@UMW, and I have to say it was much easier to use! Or at least easier to set up. I created a little site for displaying some of my art but I wanted to specifically explain more of the artistic process so I used a theme that would let me display my post’s featured image very largely on my site. This way, I could make each of my pieces its post so that inside the post I could talk about my process there.

One of the main differences between Sites@UMW is the login system, I like that it is easier for you to set up a site and log in using your umw netID and password HOWEVER… DoOO is better because you would be able to take it with you when you graduate whereas with Sites@UMW you wouldn’t be able to access it when you lose your UMW netID and password. You also can’t change the full domain name which is disappointing, but I think this platform is great for anyone just wanting to make a quick website for a class and don’t need it after they graduate.

  • TOP SECRET Video Project

shhhhhh….. This has been such a fun project so far and we haven’t even gotten to the best bits yet! I finished making my storyboard for this and honestly… I think it’s really funny but also kinda stupid lol. I wanted to base my project on the DKC video that we use for class visits and the one that always plays in the HCC but I added a little spin since we are the ADC now not the DKC.

    Here’s my video!

One thing I’ve learned throughout this process so far is that 60 seconds is not very long for all the things I want to put in this video. Since my storyboard is already a little over the 60-second limit I might have to chop down on some of my content. Otherwise cannot wait to learn more when I get to the actual editing, audio recording and filming process!

I’ve also made a script for this project if anyone is interested πŸ™‚

  • Accessibility Updates

Today I updated a page on my website called A Guide to Accessible Web Design. At the start, this page was a MESS. The blocks of bright colors matched with brightly colored texts killed the graphic designer in me just a little bit. The first thing I did to fix this page was change the text color and get rid of the backgrounds because they looked funny in my opinion. The next thing I did was change the links to read easier, with descriptive texts. I also made sure that all the headers and body text were the correct size (16px), H2 Headers and H3 subheadings. I also added spaces between the body text, image, and subheadings so that it was easier to read and the text wasn’t too bunched up. Finally, I added alt text to the image on the page.

Additionally, I fixed all of the images on my main site so that they all now have alt text (I also deleted the many extra images I had in my media library (because they did NOT need to be there lol).

  • Fifth Post!

For this post, I troubleshooted how to fix my broken website! First, to break my site I changed my URL by adding 333 to the end, it looked like this.

    After My Site Broke

I went back to domain of ones own and clicked on my wp admin URL. I then scrolled down to settings, hit general, and changed my url back to the original

What my page looked like before fixing site

I didn’t google anything, I first tried and see if I could fix it through domain of ones own back page but it didn’t work. Then I tried to go back to my original settings, Haley found it as well and gave me a hint to just scroll down, so from there I fixed it.

  • Accessibility Blog

I learned the Curb-Cut effect is when adjustments are made for people with disabilities but those adjustments end up helping a larger group of people. An example of curb-cut effect is closed captions.

My question: Do we add alt text to decretive images?

  • Sites Blog

Here is a link to a subsite I created: training.umwsites.net.

Sites@UMW allows you to create a website for a small or short term project. You only use WordPress when adding to the site and don’t have much of an option to change the theme. you can create as many subsites, they can used for personal or educational purposes. You can name your subsite anything you’d like but keep in mind, “umwsites.net” will be attached to your title. After graduation, its possible to download your subsite but you’ll have to change the URL (“umwsites.net”). If you want access to hundreds of themes, plugins and space to show your creativity, creating a DoOO will be best. You’ll be able to create a long term website that is dedicated to you. You can name your website anything you like and it wont have “umwsites.net” attached at the end. after graduation, you can take the site with you can modify it whenever you want.

  • Plugin Blog

I used an interactive plugin called H5P. It allows you to create word searches, quizzes, cross words puzzles, and much much more! I created a simple crossword puzzle (check out the menu to use it). I used H5P because I wanted to use a plugin that added an extra interesting feature to my website!

I’m excited to learn about InDesign because it sounds most interesting.
