Hooray!! I completed my first-ever mini-workshop and I think it was a great success! I hope everyone now has some new useful tools they can use in their future digital projects. This was such a fun workshop, and I’m so glad I was able to do it.
(I actually uploaded my advertisement to GIPHY so I could get the animated aspects here ) UPDATE: Giphy is being MEAN and not letting me embed my gif
This was seriously my favorite project yet, although I did also really enjoy the ADC video… I loved getting to design my own little nametag!
I think TinkerCard was an interesting and easy beginner tool to work with, however, it definitely has its quirks and limitations. I felt very restricted as to what I could actually do with my design until I discovered a tool where I could morph and squish stuff similar to using a pen tool in Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop since I have experience in that. However, I couldn’t add any more points to morph and was stuck to the amount they gave me (I think it was about 5 points.
For anyone who may think I’m talking crazy nonsense, this is what the pen tool looks like in Adobe. You can drag points and curve them to make shapes.
For my name tag, I’m not really sure where I drew inspiration from I just thought of things I like to draw and one of those things is cute little dragons. So I made him sleepy and cute.
This was my original design I drew on Procreate, and then my final 3D design! I wish I added the little arms but it kind of looked weird when I tried to do them in TinkerCard.
Unfortunately, I have not found time to print my nametage yet! But I will update this post when I do.
I made two versions for this video, a version with sound and interviews & a version with no sound and no interviews! (the one with no sound is for the ADC’s smart TVs of course.)
The process of making these videos was a lot of fun, and I loved being able to have the creative freedom to make a video project like this. I see everyone took very different routes for their own videos but my main inspiration was making a parody video of the original DKC introduction video that we all practiced earlier in the semester.
The biggest road bump that occurred in the process of making these two videos was that my original interview shots and audio were very poor quality, so I had to redo all the interview shots. I recorded with a camera that had very strange video settings and it made everything look horrible.
Otherwise, this was a very fun project and I hope you enjoy my videos!
images animations and effects were all from the CapCut free library
Today I finally dabbled into Sites@UMW, and I have to say it was much easier to use! Or at least easier to set up. I created a little site for displaying some of my art but I wanted to specifically explain more of the artistic process so I used a theme that would let me display my post’s featured image very largely on my site. This way, I could make each of my pieces its post so that inside the post I could talk about my process there.
One of the main differences between Sites@UMW is the login system, I like that it is easier for you to set up a site and log in using your umw netID and password HOWEVER… DoOO is better because you would be able to take it with you when you graduate whereas with Sites@UMW you wouldn’t be able to access it when you lose your UMW netID and password. You also can’t change the full domain name which is disappointing, but I think this platform is great for anyone just wanting to make a quick website for a class and don’t need it after they graduate.
shhhhhh….. This has been such a fun project so far and we haven’t even gotten to the best bits yet! I finished making my storyboard for this and honestly… I think it’s really funny but also kinda stupid lol. I wanted to base my project on the DKC video that we use for class visits and the one that always plays in the HCC but I added a little spin since we are the ADC now not the DKC.
Here’s my video!
One thing I’ve learned throughout this process so far is that 60 seconds is not very long for all the things I want to put in this video. Since my storyboard is already a little over the 60-second limit I might have to chop down on some of my content. Otherwise cannot wait to learn more when I get to the actual editing, audio recording and filming process!
I’ve also made a script for this project if anyone is interested
Today I updated a page on my website called A Guide to Accessible Web Design. At the start, this page was a MESS. The blocks of bright colors matched with brightly colored texts killed the graphic designer in me just a little bit. The first thing I did to fix this page was change the text color and get rid of the backgrounds because they looked funny in my opinion. The next thing I did was change the links to read easier, with descriptive texts. I also made sure that all the headers and body text were the correct size (16px), H2 Headers and H3 subheadings. I also added spaces between the body text, image, and subheadings so that it was easier to read and the text wasn’t too bunched up. Finally, I added alt text to the image on the page.
Additionally, I fixed all of the images on my main site so that they all now have alt text (I also deleted the many extra images I had in my media library (because they did NOT need to be there lol).
I would say I am successfully better at WordPress since my previous post. I changed my theme which opened up soooo many more customization options! I am definitely building more of a site identity. I changed the background of my site so that there are now little jellyfish that appear on the sidebars and I added a new header for my site that I created in Canva!
Another change to my site is I added a plugin called “Fonts Plugin” which allows me to change the typography customization on my site, and give me wayyyyy more options to customize.
Finally, when researching more appointment types at the Digital Knowledge Center I would say the appointment types I am looking forward to the most are 3-D design projects and Image Graphics projects. Firstly, this is because I am interested in making 3-D designs myself and would like to learn more about the process and how to teach other people about the process. Secondly, I would say the most experience I have regarding digital projects would be in Adobe applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. So I am excited to learn more about how to teach people how to make projects like these in consultant appointments.
Today I learned how to customize my website in WordPress. I successfully added a new theme and created home, about, and blog pages. Something new I learned about WordPress was…well everything because I haven’t used WordPress ever. I did learn how to edit each of my pages and how to customize my website.
Apart from my website, I will share my most watched YouTube video. I love this video because it helps me focus when I am studying and I think other student’s might also like this method! “Pomodoro Timers” allow me to be effective when studying because they consist of working periods and breaks. Whether I am working on a digital project, doing homework, or writing a paper the relaxing music, Pomodoro Timer, and cute cats help me get my work done effectively.
