Sites@UMW

You’ve likely seen the Sites@UMW information and login on the landing page at umw.domains. Now is the time to start learning! One of your responsibilities as a DKC consultant is to understand the difference between the two platforms and help students decide what might be the best fit for their project.

Reading

Besides the side by side comparison feature we have on umw.domains landing page we also have a guide that compares and contrasts both platforms. Make sure you read and review both.

The process of setting up and editing a site is similar to Domain of One’s Own. However, we also offer a comprehensive Getting Started with Sites@UMW guide that walks you through every step.

Activity

To get familiar with Sites@UMW do the following:

  • Sign-up for an account and create a subsite (call it whatever you want)
  • Check out the default theme and what options are available
  • Update your profile information to choose a different display name than the default
  • Add a bit of fake content to your site (feel free to get creative here, make a fake club, product, or whatever you want). Can you do all the things you normally can on your own site?
  • Look at the themes that are available on Sites@UMW. Pick something that catches your eye and customize it a bit.
  • Look at the plugins that are available on Sites@UMW. Enable one and see what it does.
  • For your blog post I want you to:
    • Share a link to the subsite you created
    • If you had to describe the difference between Sites@UMW and DoOO to a friend who knew nothing about them (but knew you could build websites) what would you say? Basically what non-jargon way would you simply and quickly describe the difference.
