Quick Facts

  • Platforms: Mac, iOS
  • Recommended For: Beginners – This a great tool to learn video editing, or basic editing, but lacks some advanced features.

Things to Know

iMovie has an abundance of easy to use filters and effects, including the option to use a green screen. You can also edit your sound with ease, without also impacting your video. iMovie comes with built in templates for titles, backgrounds and transitions. It also gives you the option to format your video as a trailer.

If you are working on a device with a lower processing system, iMovie has the tendency to crash when working with complicated or long videos.

YouTube

YouTube

Tool Summary

YouTube is the world’s largest video content platform, and is owned and operated by Google inc. YouTube features free to watch videos on nearly every topic – both for entertainment and education. Users can also create their own profile and channel, where they can upload videos, share said videos with viewers, and comment on other videos if they so desire.

Quick Facts

  • Price: Free
  • Platforms: Mac, Windows, Linux, and mobile
  • Recommended For: Nearly everyone

Things to know

YouTube has several uses for the average viewer, content creators, and in an educational setting. Users are able to search for publicly available videos and comment on them. YouTube can also be used in a class setting (i.e. a student can record a video on their phone or laptop and upload it on YouTube). Professors can use YouTube to give students more options for turning in assignments (i.e. write about a topic or record yourself talking about a topic and upload it as a video), to augment lecture and textbook material, or even as the basis for the class in creative cases.

When uploading videos, it is important to pay attention to the visibility settings of the video. A video can be set to Public, in which case anyone can search for or view it; Unlisted, where it can’t be searched for and can only be viewed with a link to the URL; or Private, where it can only be viewed by you.

DaVinci Resolve 16

DaVinci Resolve 16

Tool Summary

DaVinci Resolve 16 is a software tool that combines professional 8K editing, color correction, visual effects and audio post production! The free version of this program is very comprehensive and holds its ground when compared to the other popular editing programs.

Quick Facts

  • Price: Free
  • Platforms: Mac, Windows, and Linux
  • Recommended for: Advanced users – The interface can be very overwhelming when you first start using it.

Things to Know

When you first download DaVinci it allows you to choose what you would like the program interface to look like (if you’re used to another program like Premiere or Final Cut). If you’re working in the standard DaVinci interface one thing to note is that the way you navigate between windows is by clicking through icons at the bottom. One cool thing you can do is change how the video and audio clips appear on the timeline, as well as the timeline itself. While exporting you can make your project into a XML, EDLs, or AAF to move the project between DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Premiere Pro. The only downside is that DaVinci may be slower on older computer models.
