Prompt: What did you think your work as a tutor would involve? What does it actually involve? How do you think that DKC tutors act as student leaders at UMW?

To me, tutoring was going to involve teaching and helping students learn how to use certain applications and online tools. To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what I would be assisting them in, all I knew was that I myself would need to be trained and learn these skills myself.

After almost a year of tutoring, I realized that tutoring isn’t teaching per-se, but rather it’s helping other students to gain their own set of skills and teach them in a way that doesn’t include any sort of ‘social class.’ Being a student, I relate to most of the students that walk in since I’m around the same age and for the obvious fact that I’m a student. I attend classes, I’m constantly broke, I always seek out assistance, and all I want to do is sleep and eat, but the most important thing I’ve learned is to use my on-campus resources like the gym, writing and speaking center, and even the digital knowledge center.

Tutors of the DKC act like students leaders at UMW in the sense that we obtain knowledge that will help improve the community of UMW. Just like any other student aide, we are aware of the occurrences that happen “backstage”. We help to better UMW as a whole by hopefully making the changes that we constantly undergo easier for students.
