Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro

Tool Summary

Premiere Pro is the industry-leading video editing software for film, TV, and the web. You can edit footage, audio, and graphics as well as easily integrate files from Adobe stock. If you are working in Adobe Audition or After Effects you can easily link compositions from those programs into your Premiere project.

Quick Facts

  • Price: Part of Adobe Creative Cloud subscription – 7 day free trial, a monthly fee after that. There is a discount for students
  • Platforms: macOS and Windows
  • Recommended for: Advanced users – like many Adobe applications this program has a learning curve and may feel complicated at first.

Things to Know

Premiere is organized by using “windows”. The tab you are on will dictate how the windows look in the program. Oftentimes the windows have multiple tabs in themselves, which allows the user to access certain things easily. If you have a lot of material on your timeline you can mark the “in” and “out” points; this tells Premiere you only want to export what is in between those points. One important thing to note is that when exporting a project, you will only be able to export when you are in the “timeline” window.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

Tool Summary

Microsoft Word is a word-processor that can create a variety of documents, including resumes, business contracts, instructional documents, and letters.

UMW students, faculty, and staff can access the entire Microsoft 360 Suite, including Word, for free by logging in with a UMW email address and password at login.microsoftonline.com.

Quick Facts

  • Price: free with UMW school email
  • Platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS
  • Recommended for: Beginners – the program is fairly intuitive, but finding specific features can be challenging with the abundance of options.

Things to Know

Word is great for text based media, but it also offers many features to help you do more than just write. Within the 9 tabs there are a plethora of options, such as making tables, inserting images, sending emails, adding direct edits with a virtual pen or highlighter, and changing the layout and design of your document. The majority of features people will use are under the “home” tab. It is worth looking through every tab, especially the “review” tab. This is where you can check your spelling and grammar, have Word read your document aloud to you, and check the accessibility – something we highly recommend making a regular habit.

DaVinci Resolve 16

DaVinci Resolve 16

Tool Summary

DaVinci Resolve 16 is a software tool that combines professional 8K editing, color correction, visual effects and audio post production! The free version of this program is very comprehensive and holds its ground when compared to the other popular editing programs.

Quick Facts

  • Price: Free
  • Platforms: Mac, Windows, and Linux
  • Recommended for: Advanced users – The interface can be very overwhelming when you first start using it.

Things to Know

When you first download DaVinci it allows you to choose what you would like the program interface to look like (if you’re used to another program like Premiere or Final Cut). If you’re working in the standard DaVinci interface one thing to note is that the way you navigate between windows is by clicking through icons at the bottom. One cool thing you can do is change how the video and audio clips appear on the timeline, as well as the timeline itself. While exporting you can make your project into a XML, EDLs, or AAF to move the project between DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Premiere Pro. The only downside is that DaVinci may be slower on older computer models.

Zoom

Zoom

Tool Summary

Zoom is a video communication software. It has many features, such as a chat function, screen sharing, virtual reactions, recording and more.

Quick Facts

  • Price:
    • Free
    • Pro, Business, & Enterprise
  • Platforms: MacOS, iOS, Windows, Android, Chrome OS, and Linux
  • Recommended for: Beginners – This tool is fairly intuitive for participants but being a host can be slightly more complicated.

Things to Know

Zoom is a great resource but there are some things you’ll want to know to make your next meeting go smoothly. When sharing your screen, you have to click a specific button in the bottom left corner to share the audio on your computer, or else it will be silent. Also, if you’re sharing your screen make sure to keep your microphone on, muting yourself will mute all of the audio coming from your device. If you go by a different name you can change the screen name to reflect that, either through your account settings or during the meeting. When you host a meeting there are settings that automatically come turned off, like letting participants share their screens, so make sure you check settings before you start your meeting. We also recommend setting a profile picture, this is helpful for other people to be able to see you even if your video is turned off.
